Sheets of thermoplastic plastics material of thickness from 10 Ám. to a few mm. are made by sintering under pressure and at elevated temperature hollow beads of the material with a diameter between 10 Ám. and 3 mm. and a softening point between 30‹ and 150‹ C. The beads may be mixed with a fibrous material before sintering, the mixture containing 1-99 wt. per cent of beads. Preferably the thermoplastic plastics material is a copolymer comprising 70-92 wt. per cent vinyl chloride, 30-8 wt. per cent ethylene and optionally 0À1-15 wt. per cent propylene and the sintering is carried out at a temperature of 50-90‹ C. and a pressure of 1-20 atmospheres. The beads may be used to coat a preformed sheet, forming a coherent surface coating after sintering. A sintering pressure of less than 5 atmospheres may be used so that some undamaged beads are incorporated in the sheet, which may then be used as a wallpaper. |
