1,241,490. Primary electric cell. FMC CORP. 21 Nov., 1969, No. 56986/69. Heading H1B. A primary electric cell comprises a zinc, zincbase alloy, magnesium or magnesium-base alloy negative electrode and a positive electrode in contact with a depolarizer which is an ionizable peroxymonosulphate, preferably of K<SP>+</SP>, Na<SP>+</SP>, Li<SP>+</SP> or NH 4 <SP>+</SP>. The chemical attack of the depolarizer on the anode can be stopped by using a diaphragm, e.g. a cation exchange membrane, and also by adding up to 30% by weight an ionizable phosphate to the peroxymonosulphate depolarizer, e.g. ortho-, pyro- and per-phosphates such as peroxydiphosphates, and polymeric phosphates such as tripolyphosphates. The cells may thus be used with or without a cell diaphragm. Conventional additives may be added to the depolarizers. The cell is of the deferred action type and water or a conducting liquid such as an aqueous solution of KCl may be added to the solid depolarizer in the cell, which depolarizer may be surrounded by a cylindrical cation-exchange membrane. The electrodes may be placed directly into a solution of the depolarizer, or a carrier, e.g. paper, impregnated with the depolarizer may be wetted before or after insertion between the electrodes. |
