PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize a character corresponding to a template, with which an energy function value between position corrected hand position data and reference position data is minimized, as the character of that hand. SOLUTION: Between the respective points of hand vector data U(1), U(2)...} of the hand to be a character recognizing object and reference vector data V(1), V(2)...} of the template, the degree of similarity in a vector direction is compared while defining the maximum similarity as 10O. Then, a CPU finds a distance to reference position data P(i) corresponding to reference vector data V T(i)} in correspondent relation as the energy function value and finds parameters for determining the moving direction and size magnification of the input hand. This parameter is used for position size correction (S124). After the position size correction, the energy function value (similarity) is compared again between templates and the final recognizing character is specified (S125).
