PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for external use useful for a cosmetic capable of maintaining a high moisture retaining effect for many hours, etc., without causing sense of use of greasiness. SOLUTION: This composition for external use is obtained by combining and formulating neotrehalose one of structural isomer of trehalose with a water- soluble polyhydric alcohol and is capable of continuing a high moisture retaining effect for many hours without causing sense of use of greasiness.
