PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the formation of crystals and produce a tertiary butanol useful as a industrial raw material, etc., with a good operating efficiency by removing dimethylformamide present in a trace amount in an olefin mixture containing isobutylene, etc., and then carrying out a hydrating reaction. SOLUTION: When an olefin mixture containing isobutylene and n-butene and water as raw materials are reacted in the presence of a heteropoly acid containing one or more elements selected from among Mo, W and V as condensation coordinating elements to selectively hydrate the isobutylene and produce tertiary butanol, the olefin mixture which is the raw material is directly, brought into contact with the water (used in an amount of preferably 0.01-1 expressed in terms of weight ratio to the olefin mixture) or dimethylformamide contained in a trace amount in the raw material olefin mixture is removed with an ion exchange resin such as a strong acidic ion exchange resin in an extraction column 1 and then subjected to a hydrating reaction. |
