A process for the treatment of an aqueous medium comprising technetium in the form of dissolved pertechnetate comprises bringing the medium into contact with a metal to thereby reduce the dissolved pertechnetate to at least one non-metallic technetium species of lower oxidation state. Aluminium is a preferred metal, and the reduced technetium (VI) and (V) species plate out thereon, facilitating the removal of the technetium. When the aluminium is exhausted, it may be rejuvenated by acid treatment. The process may be used in conjunction with known process for the removal of other ingredients from radioactive waste. |
