Oxidation product of polyarylene sulfides comprising recurring units of the formula+547 C6H4-S+548 (I)in the form of a compound comprising recurring units of the formula+547 +545 C6H4-S+546 a+545 C6H4-SO+546 b+548 (II)in which the sulfur/oxygen ratio is from 1:0.1 to 1:1, the sum of a and b always being 1 and a and b each being greater than zero or with the proviso that a is zero if b is 1.
