n elevator car 1 has at least one upper switch 5 and at least one lower switch 8 mounted on the car, and which are actuated by fixed cams 3, 4. The elevator controller includes an interlock circuit which generates slowdown and/or limit signals depending on direction signals from the controller when the switches are actuated. This arrangement allows as few as two switches to act as limit or slowdown switches according to the direction of travel of the elevator.
