PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quicken a feedback of multi-valued error diffusion by allowing a quantization error data detection section to retrieve a quantization error data detection table with output data of a feedback adder used for an address to obtain a quantization error thereby simplifying the circuit configuration. SOLUTION: In the continuous gradation error diffusion processing, an adder 514 adds feedback error data ED 47-70 whose error is spread to input data ED 17-10 to provide an output of a sum ED 28-20. A quantization error data detection table 518 consisting of a RAM table receives data by using the sum ED 28-20 as an address to obtain gradation error data ED 37-30 within a gradation range matching with a threshold level (=1, 8, 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 128, 144, 160, 176, 192, 224, 255) in a 4-bit code processing section 517. An error integral matrix 51B applies error weight integration processing to pixels around a target pixel to generate the feedback error data ED 47-70, which are fed to the adder 514.
