PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio receiver that surely discriminates presence of a broadcast signal where the manufacturing cost is suppressed. SOLUTION: An operation panel 24 is operated and a user selects a broadcast area based on a menu. When the broadcast area is decided, a microcomputer 22 decides a step frequency and a scanning speed determined depending on the broadcast area and stores them to a memory 22b. Furthermore, the step frequency and the scanning speed depending on each broadcast area are stored in a memory 22a. When automatic scanning is started, the microcomputer 22 discriminates presence of the broadcast signal based on the decided step frequency and scanning speed. That is, the microcomputer 22 detects an intermediate frequency IF (10.7 MHz) based on an intermediate frequency signal (IF signal) whose level is a prescribed level or over when a station detector signal is at a low level.
