PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make surely securable the recording time of information to be recorded by detecting recordable residual capacity in an information recording medium, operating the time setting after starting recording and calculating the information recording rate from a set recording time and the recordable residual capacity by residual capacity detection. SOLUTION: When recording operation of information is started, a CPU: 16 controls a display part 19 so as to display a recording mode corresponding to the information recording rate. When a user operates a time setting button 20a, and changes so as to prolong the recording end time of the information recording at present, and sets a new recording end time, the CPU: 16 respectively calculates required data amounts for every recording mode, and compares them with present recordable residual capacity of an optical disk 1 shown by a possible amount signal Sz outputted from a residual capacity detection circuit 15 to select the recording mode answering to the relevant highest information recording rate. The CPU: 16 updates/records the information recording rate of the information to be recorded also to display it on a display part 19.
