PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-quantity image even when photographing on silver salt film is inactive by storing an electric image signal corresponding to an object image with high image quality in the case that exposing action to the silver salt film is inactive. SOLUTION: In the case of judging that photographing on the film is possible based on output for a film state detection mechanism 21, a low image quality mode is set as a default image quality mode, and in the case of judging that photographing on the film is impossible, the high image quality mode is set as the default image quality mode. In the high image quality mode, the object image is picked up by an imaging device 7 under the control of a control circuit 9 and a control part and A/D-converted by the A/D conversion part of an image processing circuit 8, and then data after A/D conversion are temporarily stored in a buffer memory. Next, compression in accordance with the set image quality mode is performed. Namely, when the high image quality mode is set, the image data is compressed at low compressibility and the compressed image data is stored in the memory.
