The device (1) has a long thin construction comprising, typically, six compartments each housing a light-emitting source (11), for example an electric light bulb. The front exterior surfaces of each section are transparent or translucent, with coloring (of surface or bulb) to indicate monitoring action. The central section (2a,2b) are typically orange, the intermediate sections (3a,3b) are typically red and the outer sections (4a,4b) are typically green. An electrical controller (9) provides pulsed cyclic signals to the lights (11) in the form, typically, of three pulses of short off-duration of the orange signal followed by one pulse of green light (or red) of the same overall duration as the three orange pulses. The sequence with the red light actuated is effected for conditions where separation is below a safe distance. Actuation can be by the driver using a switch (12) or automatically using a distance detector (8) incorporated into the device. The display angle ca n be adjusted using side supports (14).
