The cup for a surgical hip prosthesis has a hemispherical shell with a pole (2) and an equatorial edge (3). It has a channelled annular band (22) adjacent to the edge to anchor the cup in the condylar cavity of the patient. The channel surfaces are angled to the meridian of the cup.
