PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of suppressing read images from becoming unclear by the stain of second glass and reading excellent images in the image reader provided with first glass for mounting an original at the time of reading the image of the original arranged at a prescribed fixed position and the second glass which the original is made to face at the time of reading the image of the original carried through a prescribed route during the carriage. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with platen glass G1 for mounting the original, slit glass G2 which the original image is made to face while carrying the original and a cover 2 slidably installed to the glass G2. When a document feeder DF is not at a closed position, the glass G2 is covered with the cover 2. When the document feeder DF is at the closed position, the cover 2 is slid, the glass G2 is exposed and the original carried by the document feeder DF is made to face the glass G2.
