PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly decrease the memory capacity and to make discriminable paper money fast by acquiring image data only at the point which is featured most for the discrimination for every line to be scanned and generating a read pattern. SOLUTION: A paper money 11 is scanned optical and longitudinally and analog video signals outputted from an image sensor 12 for every scan are converted by an A/D converter 13 into a multi-valued digital signal to generate the read pattern of the paper money. Only data within an address range specified previously in an extracted data address table 56 are extracted from the generated pattern data and stored in order in a read pattern memory 52 to acquire image data in the predetermined range only at points which are featured most for deciding the money kinds of the discriminated on one surface of the paper money 11, thus generating the read pattern.
