The process enables the industrial separation of ammonia from a lactam solution resulting from the cyclising hydrolysis of an aminonitrile in conditions which allow a considerable reduction in energy consumption. A process for the separation by distillation of ammonia contained in an aqueous caprolactam solution in which the base of the distillation column is less than or equal to 160 deg C. and the absolute pressure is less than or equal to 5 bars. The ammonia distilling off at the column head is compressed to 10 bars then condensed at 25 - 60 deg C.
