PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a process for producing novel self-supporting type optical fiber cables which are inexpensive and have good quality by providing the apparatus with a tension device having play portions and maintaining core portions and the play portions of the tension device at a non-coupling relation, thereby generating waving parts in the core portions. SOLUTION: Respective accepting stations 63 for accepting the self-supporting type cables 10 are provided with contour shapes having the tension recessed parts 62, the play recessed portions 64 and intermediate portions 68. The tension recessed parts 62 clamp messenger portions 12 but the play portions 64 have the sufficient non-coupling relation with the core portions 14, by which the tension device is prevented from directly acting tension on the core portions 14. The tension device preferably generates direct tension only in the messenger portions 12 cooperatively with the messenger wire tension device. The play portions 64 are capable of generating the waving in the cable portions. As a result, the damage of webs 18 and the excess deformation of the cable are averted.
