PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly efficiently and precisely inspect the state of a metallic plane surface having irregularities such as rolled scales. SOLUTION: In this method for inspecting appearance, when irradiating the surface of an object 8 to be inspected carried to a prescribed position by a carrying device 1 with illuminating lights, the irradiating angle of the illuminating lights irradiated by an illuminating device 3 to the irregularities directions of the surface of the object 8 is set as a first prescribed angle according to the irregularities, and the irradiating angle to the projecting and recessing directions of the surface of the object 8 is set as a second prescribed angle according to the projection and recession. Also, the surface of the object 8 which is irradiated with the illuminating lights is photographed by a photographing camera 4, and the analysis and processing of the photographic image is operated by an image processor 5, and the validity/invalidity of the object 8 is judged, based on the signal outputted from the image processor 5 by a controller 7, and an object 8 is selected, based on the judged result.
