PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine quantitatively trace amounts of elements, such as C, S, N, or H contained in a metal sample such as iron and steel, with high sensitivity. SOLUTION: Either oxygen gas or inert gas is supplied to an extraction cell 1 wound with a high frequency coil 4, and the coil 4 is electrified, so as to suspend a metal sample 5 in a space inside the cell 1 by high frequency levitation and to fuse the sample 5 by heating. Gas generated at that time is conveyed by the inert gas or the oxygen gas to be supplied to a mass spectrometer 22, so as to determine quantitatively at least one from among carbon, sulfur, nitrogen and hydrogen contained in the metal sample 5 by the mass spectrometer 22.
