摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit a signal whose transmission rate is as high as more than 40 Gbit/s over an ultra-long distance of 6000 km or over. SOLUTION: An optical transmitter 10 outputs a signal light with an optical pulse width of 8 ps consisting of optical soliton with a transmission rate of 40 Gbit/s to an optical transmission line 12 where many transmission optical fibers 14 are connected in series respectively through optical amplifiers and dispersion compensation fibers 18 are inserted at a proper interval. The dispersion compensation fiber 18 is an element that reduces accumulated wavelength dispersion by the transmission optical fibers 14 to almost nullify it. The signal light sent through the optical transmission line 12 is given to a optical receiver 20 where the signal is reception-processed. The wavelength dispersion of the transmission optical fiber 14 causes a wavelength dispersion of 0.23 ps/nm/km or over at a signal wavelength of 1552.8 nm. The dispersion compensation by the dispersion compensation fiber 18 is 10 ps/nm-40 ps/nm.
