PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface mounted type variable resistor which can be reduced in size and thickness. SOLUTION: A surface mounted variable resistor is provided with a substrate 6 on which a resistor 9 is formed, a slider 7 which moves in contact with the resistor 9 formed on the substrate 6, a rotating body 8 holding the slider 7, and an adjusted section 8a which is formed on the rotating body 8 and can be adjusted from the outside. The resistor is also provided with a current collecting electrode terminal 3 to which the rotating body 8 and slider 7 are integrally rotatably provided and which is inserted into the central part of the resistor, a lead terminal 4 which is integrally extended from the terminal 3, has a U-shaped end section, and is formed in a surface-mountable state, and a case 2 which houses the rotating body 8 and slider 7 and has an opening in at least one surface.
