PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately obtain a charging efficiency of an engine or an amount of a remaining exhaust gas at the engine. SOLUTION: A predetermined amount of a trace gas TG is injected from a suction port 9 to a cylinder 2 of an engine 1 sucking a fuel-air mixture G. Moreover, an exhaust gas EG collected from an exhaust port 10 is introduced to a tracer gas detector 22 and a concentration of the tracer gas in the exhaust gas is measured. A flow rate of the fuel-air mixture G sucked to the cylinder 2 is obtained on the basis of the concentration of the tracer gas and the injection amount of the tracer gas. An amount of the suction air is obtained on the basis of an amount of the fuel-air mixture and a gas exchange cycle, and a charging efficiency of the engine 1 is obtained from the amount of the suction air and a stroke volume of the engine 1.
