There is disclosed a genus of compounds and pharmaceutical compositions that are protective for mitigating damage associated with tissue ischemia, particularly stroke (CNS ischemia), and ischemia of the myocardium. The present invention further provides a method for treating tissue damage cause d by ischemia. Lastly, the present invention provides a method for treating tissue damage caused by providing a compound that inhibits the cytotoxic activity of 3-aminopropanal.
