The control unit (2) has a flash memory (22) permitting electric erasure and rewriting, with erasable blocks and storing control programs and data for a preset object (10) to be controlled. A central processing unit (20) controls the object in normal operation according to the stored control program and data. The central processing unit erases the memory content in each block identified by an external unit (14) instruction after a preset rewriting condition, while replacing it by a new content from the external unit. The central processing unit counts the number of erasing operations as the number of rewrites of the flash memory. An Independent claim is included for a method for counting the number of rewrites.
