<p>For measuring the shape of an internal structure within a physical structure, non penetrating measurements of an exterior surface shape of the physical structure are made in a region where the exterior surface shape is related to the shape of the internal structure underneath. A first set of data describing the exterior surface shape in that region is obtained thereby. Then, penetrating measurements of the shape of the internal structure are made and a second set of data relating to the shape of the internal structure is received. A third set of data describing the shape of the internal structure is obtained by combining at least selected portions of the first and second sets of data. The non-penetrating measurements form a simple and effective tool for enhancing the results of the penetrating measurements. A system for carrying out the proposed method is described as well.</p> |
