Modified starches used as retention agents for pigments, inorganic fillers and fines in the production of paper are obtained by digesting starch or its derivatives and/or degradation products in aqueous solution in presence of (A) cationic polymer(s) with at least 20 wt.% dialkylaminoalkyl-(meth)acrylamide units and (B) particulate mineral-based additive(s).
