Compression is provided by a screw conveyor transporting the material through four distinct sections: M - material gathering, V - consolidation, K - compression and a dry material transport section (4). Section (4) is partially closed by a conical plug (5) that is held in position by a hydraulic linkage (7,8). The gap (20) through which the material passes is determined by the pressure difference between the material and the hydraulic linkage and is therefore variable by varying the hydraulic force. A further variation, designed to increase the dwell time of the material, is possible by changing the length of section (4) since the tubing is formed by two half-shells that can be interchanged. Similarly the perforated conical compression section (3) can be interchanged so that sieves with different meshes can be used, or simply to permit easy cleaning.
