A thin film magnetic head having the tip width thereof formed with high-accuracy without an increase in reluctance at the tip portion of a recording pole layer. The recording pole layer (12) is divided, in the order mentioned from an ABS (76) side, into a tip portion (121), a rear wide portion (122), a flare portion (123) and a yoke portion (124), with the tip portion (121) and the rear wide portion (122) provided on a light gap layer (84). The rear wide portion (122) has a larger width than the tip portion (121) provided that a direction perpendicular to the film thickness direction of the light gap layer (84) and in parallel to the ABS (76) is taken as a width. Since the rear wide portion (122) is provided between the tip portion (121) and the flare portion (123) to reduce reluctance, an increase in reluctance can be prevented even if the flare portion (123) forming portion from which a large quantity of light is reflected is disposed away from the ABS (76) to increase the pattern accuracy of the tip width.
