The control system promotes rapid heating up of the catalytic converter (19) in the exhaust system (12) of an internal combustion engine (10). The catalytic converter is of the three-way type and there is a lambda sensor (18) immediately upstream of it. The lambda sensor is connected to a microcomputer (20) with a data memory (23). There are sensors mounted on the engine to measure the coolant temperature (22) and the rotational speed (N) of the engine. The induction tract (11) contains an airflow sensor (13), a throttle valve (14) and a fuel injector (15). When the engine is stopped the internal resistance of the lambda sensor and its temperature are recorded. These values are measured again when the engine is restarted. The time during which the engine has been stopped is recorded. These values are used to calculate the start-up temperature of the catalyser and modify the catalyser warm-up procedure accordingly.
