An antimicrobial composition contains a mixture of hydrophilic and hydrophobic GRAS flavorings. An antimicrobial composition comprises either: (1) a mixture of two or more GRAS (generally recognized as safe) flavorings (except polyphenol compounds or benzyl alcohol) and one or more hydrophilic, alcoholic and/or non-alcoholic GRAS flavorings; or (2) a mixture of benzyl alcohol or polyphenol compounds and one or more hydrophilic, non-alcoholic GRAS flavorings without any GRAS alcohols. The alcoholic GRAS flavoring is a mono- or polyvalent 2-10C alcohol. The non-alcoholic GRAS flavoring is a 1-15C organic acid or a physiological salt, a hydrophilic acetate and/or a hydrophilic aldehyde.
