The laser beam homogenizer takes the form of an element (4) which is transparent to laser light, has roughened surfaces, and is placed in the beam path in front of the object undergoing surface treatment. Preferred Features: The element (4) letting through laser light is roughened at least on the beam entry surface or on the beam exit surface. As a consequence of its entire structure or only partially roughened surfaces, it produces a beam homogenizing effect on the surface undergoing treatment. The element (4) consists of glass or a transparent plastic material. Its surface is roughened by etching or by blasting with sand or glass globules. The element can take the form of a plane-parallel layer. It can take the form of lens. The laser used is an infrared laser. It can be a neodymium yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser or a diode laser producing infrared radiation.
