The method involves setting up connections to terminals using a character sequence containing the address or call number of the called terminal. A character sequence for setting up a connection sent via a certain connection and not answered by the terminal after a defined period or number of repetitions is sent via further connections. When the system receives a response character sequence via one of the further connections it sets up a link via that connection.
