An indirect converter includes on the input-side a rectifier (1) and on the output-side, an inverter (2) with a link circuit comprising a back-up capacitor (3) with a protection circuit (7,8) connected across the capacitor, and including a release element (7) and a current limiting element (8). The current limiting element (8) is a NTC-thermistor or resistor, and the release or trip element is a thyristor (7).
