This invention relates to a catalyst composition comprising: (a) a source of a Group VIII metal, (b) a bidentate phosphine ligand having the formula (I) R<1>R<2>P(CH2)nPR<3>R<4> where n is 1 or 2 and R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are independently selected from a phenyl group or an alkyl substituted phenyl group with the proviso that at least one of R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> is an alkyl substituted phenyl group, and (c) a promoter.
