<p>A full from net shape roll finished contacting machine element such as a gear (84) is produced from a near net shape workpiece (24) having a plurality of teeth (82) each with a tooth flank (86) with a nominally involute surface and a root/fillet region (88) with a trochoidal surface. A rolling die (30) having an outer peripheral contoured surface including a plurality of teeth (42) is advanced in an in-feed direction thereby deforming the surface of each tooth flank and of a corresponding root/fillet region until a final net shape of each tooth and root/fillet is achieved.</p> |
