PURPOSE: When slag is insufficiently stirred up and down, the amount of heat transferred to the lower layer of the slag and molten pig iron is reduced and thus only the upper layer of the slag is heated. As the result, temperature difference between secondary combustion area and the upper layer of the slag is reduced and the amount of heat transferred from the secondary combustion area to the slag is reduced. Thus the magnitude of the reduction in unit requirement of carbon material diminishes. CONSTITUTION: The present invention relates to a melt reduction apparatus for producing molten metal under slag by charging metal material, carbon material and flux into a furnace having rectangular horizontal section and inputting oxygen and gas containing plenty of oxygen into the slag through the lower blast inlet in side walls of furnace. To ensure stir of slag near the center in the direction of a short valve, inert gas is inputted into the molten metal through the lower blast inlet provided near the center in the direction of the short valve.
