<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently purify soil, lakes and marshes contaminated by a heavy metal by bringing a heavy metal-contg. medium into contact with comate roots derived by introducing Ri plasmid into a plant body having heavy metal absorbing ability to absorb and accumulate the heavy metal in the comate roots or in a plant body reproduced from the roots. SOLUTION: Ri plasmid originating from Agrobacterium rhizogenes is introduced into a plant body having heavy metal absorbing ability e.g. a sunflower and the plant body with the introduced Ri plasmid is cultivated in an appropriate culture medium to derive comate roots. The comate roots propagate actively even in a culture medium contg. no phytohormone after bacteria are removed and the roots can be infinitely cultivated and can be reproduced to a plant individual under an appropriate cultivation condition. Therefore, when a heavy metal-contg. medium is brought into contact with the comate roots by an appropriate means, the heavy metal from the medium in accordance with the plant species is absorbed and accumulated in the comate rots or in a plant body reproduced from the roots and the concn. of the heavy metal in the soil or contaminated water can be reduced.</p> |
