PURPOSE: Conditioning shampoo compositions are provided which could provide improved hair conditioning performance and eliminate or minimize slimy, excessively conditioned, wet hair feel often associated with the use of cationic hair conditioning polymers. CONSTITUTION: The compositions comprise (a) 5-50wt% of an anionic detersive surfactant component selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, zwitterionic or amphoteric surfactants having an attached anionic group at the pH of the composition, and combinations thereof; (b) 0.025-3wt% of an organic, cationic, hair conditioning polymer having a cationic charge density of 0.2-7meq/gm and an average molecular weight of 5,000-10,000,000; (c) 0.01-1 wt% of a water insoluble, synthetic ester having a viscosity of 1-300 centipoise, and being represented by either formula(I) or formula(II) wherein R1 is an alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkenyl group, having 7 to 9 carbon atoms; n is an integer of 2 to 4; R2 is an alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkenyl group, having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; and Y is an alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy or carboxy substituted alkyl or alkenyl, having 2 to 20 carbon atoms; (d) 0.05-3wt%, preferably 0.1-1wt% of an organic, water-insoluble, conditioning oil selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon oils, fatty esters other than the synthetic esters of (c) wherein the organic conditioning oil has a viscosity of 1 to 300 centipoise, preferably 2-50 centipoise; and (e) 20-94wt% of water. wherein the synthetic ester content of the composition represents 2.5-100wt%, preferably 90-100wt% of the total liquid fatty ester content of the composition.
