PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer that prints satisfactory quality images continuously on a continuous web (rolled photosensitive long sheet). SOLUTION: A printer comprises a print station, which includes a platen (cylindrical support) 80 and a print head 90 for printing every line of images on a web on the platen 80, and a web feeder, which includes slack loop stations on the input and output sides of the print station, for feeding the web longitudinally in synchronism with the printing operation of the print head 90. The web feeder includes a feeder and a receiver for feeding the web while forming a slack loop therebetween, and a proximity sensor 150 directed in the direction in which the slack loop extends to measure the extent thereof. The information of the proximity sensor 150 is sent to a controller, so that the slack loop extent is continuously controlled to a preset value.
