PRODUCTION OF 2-ETHYL-1,4,5,8-DIMETHANO-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a- OCTAHYDRONAPHTHALENE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition with controlled content of specific cyclopentadiene trimer(s) by reaction between cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene and 5-ethyl-2-norbornene under specified conditions. SOLUTION: A compound, 2-ethyl-1,4,5,8-domethano-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a- octahydronaphthalene of formula IV, intended for polymerization, contains 100-5,000 ppm of cyclopentadiene trimer(s) of formula II and/or formula III. The compound is obtained by reaction between (A) cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene and (B) 5-ethyl-2-norbornene of formula I at a temp. of 100-350 deg.C and a pressure of 0.5-20 MPa for a residence time of 0.1-360 min at 1-20 molar times of the component B based on the number of moles corresponding to double the amount of the cyclopentadiene plus dicyclopentadiene.
