PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select the subject nonpathogenic strain for prophylaxis, treatment, or the like to infectious diseases by bringing a receptor for a pathogenic bacterium strain into contact with a nonpathogenic bacterium strain to be tested and then by adding an antibody against the receptor to detect the complex of the antibody with the receptor. SOLUTION: When selecting a nonpathogenic bacterium strain binding to the receptor region for the adhesion of a pathogenic bacterium strain to tissue, the method of this invention is to bring the receptor into in vitro contact with a bacterium strain to be tested, to add an antibody against the receptor which may be labeled so as to be detectable and, if the antibody is not labeled and is not detectable, to add a reagent for detecting the antibody, and tic detect the complex of the antibody with the receptor in order to select a nonpathogenic bacterium strain useful for prophylaxis, treatment, or the like to infectious diseases through the adhesion of a pathogenic bacterium strain to tissue. The above receptor is e.g. a receptor of an enteron wall having specificity to and binding to an enterotoxin-producing colibacillus strain.
