PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reaction product having a high conversion ratio of an alkylphenol and excellent separation of a resol resin layer from a water layer in reacting a long-chain alkylphenol with formaldehyde by using an alcohol as a reaction solvent. SOLUTION: In reacting an alkylphenol containing a 12-30C alkyl as a substituent (preferably o-hexadecylphenol or the like) with formaldehyde under basic conditions, an alcohol (a 1-4C aliphatic monofunctional alcohol such as preferably methyl alcohol, etc.), is used as a reaction solvent. Formaldehyde, formalin or the like is used as an aldehyde source. An alkali metal hydroxide is preferable as a basic catalyst to be used in the reaction. The reaction is preferably carried out by using 05-5 equivalent formaldehyde, 0.1-3 equivalent catalyst and 3-8 equivalent alcohol based on 1 equivalent alkylphenol at 40-80 deg.C under the pressure of the reaction system of its own.
