The electricity meter has a rotor disc which rotates at a rate dependent on the energy consumption rate. The disc has a marking, which is detected by an optical pulse source (10), for providing a corresponding signal (S), that is converted into an energy signal (E) and received at a signal output (24), e.g. a signal output interface. The optical signal source may provide respective signals for two different positions of the rotor disc. An energy store (28) is provided to collect and store the energy provided at the signal output.
