MINICELL SEGMENTATION AND REASSEMBLY

PURPOSE: A method and apparatus improve the quality and effectiveness of telecommunication data transfer by avoiding the problems associated with excessively long minicells. CONSTITUTION: The method and apparatus for segmenting and reassembling user data packets (410) is disclosed in a telecommunication system that uses asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) with the ATM adaptation layer (AAlm) protocol as a data transfer infrastructure. The method comprises the steps of segmenting the user data packets (410) to two segments; inserting each segment into minicells (411-413); and multiplexing individual minicells by at least one data cell.
