PURPOSE: Amphiphatic molecules are provided for inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol or other lipids from intestines and for treating or preventing hyperlipidaemia, particularly hypercholesterolaemia and/or obesity. CONSTITUTION: The molecules have one or more amphipathic regions, particularly amphiphatic alpha-helix. The molecules include natural or variant a popotein and other peptides and proteins containing one or more amphipathic alpha-helix composed of at least 13, 14 or 15 amino acids. The molecules also comprise one or more peptides having the sequence of the formula 1. In the formula 1, A1, A2, A3 and A4 represent aspartic acid or glutamic acid, or homologues or analogs thereof, respectively; B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8 and B9 represent tryptophan, phenylalanine, leucine, tyrosine, isoleucine, valine or alpha-naphthylalanine, or homologs or analogs thereof, respectively; C1, C2, C3 and C4 represent lysine or arginine, respectively; D represents serine, threonine, alanine, glycine or histidine, or analogs thereof; A4, B8 and B9 are optional.
