PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the operation of altering the type of a pack by a packaging machine and avoid the use of wrong packaging material, by providing an electronic sensing means, by sensing from above an item passed through it, and by recording a characteristic aspect or mark for specification. SOLUTION: A reel 27 is pushed into a stub 29 until it contacts a stopping disk 30. Through openings 31, one electronic scanning means designed as a laser scanner 32 can view the end face 34 of the reel directly. The laser scanner 32 repeatedly traps laser beams reflected by the end face 34 of the reel, converts it to a corresponding signal, and transmits it to an evaluation unit. Via the signal generated by the laser scanner 32, the evaluation unit conclusively specifies a packaging material wound round the reel 27. Further, it checks whether the specified material matches a predetermined wrapping material or not, and determines the loading of a right material.
