USE OF COPOLYMERS BASED ON W ETHYLENICALLY UNSATURATED DICARBOXYLIC ACIDS ORDICARBOXYLIC ACID ANHYDRIDES, LOWER OLEFINS AND HYDROPHOBIC COMONOMERS FORAFTERTANNING, STUFFING OR WATERPROOFING LEATHER AND FURS

PURPOSE: The polymers commonly used for after-tanning, stuffing, or waterproofing cannot waterproof completely since the polymers penetrate only the surface of the leather and furs, and sometimes weaken dyeing nature or feeling. CONSTITUTION: The aqueous solutions or dispersions of copolymers are obtained by the radical copolymerization of; between 20 and 90 wt % of at least one mono ethylene unsaturated C4¯6 dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride as component A; between 5 and 50 wt % of at least one C2-6 olefin as component B; between 5 and 50 wt % of at least one hydrophobic comonomer selected from the group comprising the long chain olefins, esters of long chain alcohols with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, amides of long chain amides with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and the long chain alkylvinyl ethers as component C; between 0 and 40 wt % of further comonomers which can be copolymerized with the above monomers as component D; the total of the amounts of components A, B, C and optionally D being 100 wt %.
