PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect the upper face of an opened cotton even if the upper face is in fuzzy state. SOLUTION: An opening mechanism 3 is placed at a side of a traveling table holding a number of opened cotton bales, the opening mechanism 3 is provided with a spike roller 10 for opening, the opened cotton is scraped off with the spike roller 10 while moving the traveling table or the opening mechanism 3 and slowly lowering the spike roller 10 of the opening mechanism 3 and the opened cotton is transferred to the subsequent step by a carrier air flow. In an opening machine having the above construction, the opening mechanism 3 is provided with a sensor 32 attached parallel to the spike roller 10 and a swing detector 33 to detect the swing of the sensor 32 and the lowering speed of the opening mechanism 3 is restricted to a prescribed level when the sensor 32 reaches the opened cotton on the table by the lowering of the opening mechanism 3 and the pressure on the cotton reaches a prescribed level.
