PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and inexpensively produce an intermetallic compound having high relative density. SOLUTION: After powdered raw materials are preheated so that the temperature of an intermetallic compound to be formed reaches the melting point, the intermetallic compound in a solid-liquid coexisting state is formed by self- propagating high-temperature synthesizing reaction. Then, without delay, its surface alone is cooled by means of a gas causing no deterioration in the quality of the intermetallic compound to form a thin solid-phase skin. Directly after that, the pressure of the gas is regulated so that it is higher than atmospheric pressure, and the whole is cooled in this state of pressure and solidified.
